In padel, where you stand often matters more than how hard you hit. Great positioning shrinks the court for your opponents and makes the game feel effortless for you. Master a handful of movement habits and you will win points that better hitters give away for free.

Padel is a game of territory, and the net is the prize. The team controlling the net hits down into the court while the defending team has to lift the ball up, which is a losing position over time. Your first strategic goal on almost every point is to move forward and take the net as a pair, then defend that ground fiercely. Everything else in padel flows from this simple truth.
Do not rush forward recklessly, though. Advance behind good shots, split step as your opponent strikes, and only take the net when the ball you hit gives you time to arrive balanced. Get there under control and you keep it. Get there off balance and you get lobbed.
- Treat the net as the goal on every point
- Advance behind deep, controlled shots
- Move up as a pair, never alone
- Split step before your opponent contacts the ball

📲 Download freeMove as a Connected Pair
You and your partner should move as if joined by a short rope. When one of you shifts left, the other shifts left to cover the gap. When one moves up, the other moves up. This coordinated movement keeps the two of you as a united wall with no lane down the middle for opponents to exploit. The moment the rope stretches, a hole opens, and good opponents will find it instantly.
Practice mirroring your partner between points until it becomes automatic. The best padel teams are not always the biggest hitters, they are the pairs who move together, cover for each other, and never leave a gap standing open.
- Shift together to close gaps as a team
- Both move up or both move back, never split
- Cover the middle when your partner is pulled wide
- Keep an even distance between you at all times
Defend and Attack from the Glass
The walls are what make padel unique, and reading the glass is a skill you can train. On defense, do not panic and swipe at a ball heading for the back wall. Let it pass, wait for it to rebound off the glass, and take it as it comes back into a comfortable hitting zone. Staying patient and low turns a scary ball into an easy one.
Position yourself a step off the back wall so bouncing balls do not jam you. Judge the pace and angle, let the wall do the work, and prepare to lift a controlled defensive shot that buys your team time to reset your position.
- Let deep balls rebound off the glass before hitting
- Stand a step off the back wall to avoid getting jammed
- Stay low and wait for the ball to come to you
- Use the side glass to widen your reach on defense
Use the Lob to Steal the Net
The lob is the most valuable positional shot in padel. A high, deep lob over the net players forces them to retreat and defend the back wall, which hands the net to you and your partner. When you are pinned back on defense, a well placed lob is your ticket to flip the point and take control of the court without hitting a single hard ball.
Aim your lobs deep toward the corners so opponents cannot smash them, and follow your good lob forward to claim the net immediately. A lob that lands short is an invitation to be attacked, so give yourself margin and get the height right.
- Lob deep to push net players back
- Follow a good lob forward to take the net
- Aim toward the corners to prevent easy smashes
- Prioritize height and depth over disguise
Master Net Positioning and the Bandeja
Once you have the net, your job is to keep it. Stand a comfortable distance inside the service line, close enough to volley but with room to move back for lobs. When opponents lob you, resist the urge to smash everything. The bandeja, a controlled overhead played with slice, lets you keep the ball deep and stay at the net instead of retreating to chase your own hard smash.
Think of the bandeja as your holding shot: it does not end the point, it maintains your advantage. Reserve the full smash for high, short balls you can truly finish. Patience at the net wins far more points than power does.
- Hold a position just inside the service line
- Use the bandeja to stay at the net on deep lobs
- Save the full smash for short, high balls
- Volley into the gaps rather than always going for winners
Play Down the Middle to Create Confusion
A ball hit down the middle between two opponents is a positional weapon. It reduces the angles they can create against you, and it forces a split second decision about who takes it. That hesitation causes mishits, awkward collisions, and easy pop ups you can put away. When in doubt on a neutral ball, the middle is almost always the safest and smartest target.
The middle is especially deadly when both opponents are at the net, since neither wants to abandon their side. Combine middle balls with the occasional sharp angle and you will keep opponents guessing and constantly out of position.
- Target the middle to shrink opponents' angles
- Force hesitation between two net players
- Mix middle balls with occasional sharp angles
- Aim at the feet of the deeper opponent
Communicate and Recover Your Base Position
Padel is a doubles game, so talk constantly. Call the ball, call the lob, and agree who covers the middle before the point even starts. Clear communication prevents the two of you from freezing on the same ball or both leaving it. A quick word between points to reset your plan is worth more than any fancy shot.
After every exchange, recover to your base position as a pair rather than admiring your shot. Reset side by side, whether at the net or on defense, so you are balanced and ready for the next ball instead of scrambling out of shape.
- Call the ball and the lob out loud
- Agree who takes the middle before the point
- Recover to a balanced base after every shot
- Reset your plan with a quick word between points
